The Story of a Rug: From Practice Board to Statement Piece

The Story of a Rug: From Practice Board to Statement Piece

It started as just a practice board in our workshop—a place where every newcomer could get their hands on a tufting gun for the first time. Imagine this: a board where over 100 students have made their mark, each contributing to a tapestry of circles, straight lines, and diagonal strokes painted in a myriad of colours. This wasn't just any practice session; it was the beginning of something truly special.

As the board filled up, it transformed. What began as a patchwork of practice runs evolved into a canvas needing only a few final touches. We decided to fill in the gaps, utilising leftover yarns from various projects. This effort was not only about artistic completion but also about sustainability, creatively reducing waste.

This rug has been with us for two years now, moving through three different studios as we've expanded and grown. Each thread, each colours is a testament to the hundreds of students who have passed through our doors, each leaving a piece of their creativity behind.

More than a mere rug, this piece stands prominently in our studio as a colourful testament to beauty emerging from chaos, and art being accessible to everyone. This piece is woven from the collective experience of every individual who’s contributed, making it one of the most cherished pieces in our collection.

Every glance at this rug reveals more than colours and shapes—I see faces, I hear laughter, and I feel the excitement of creating something from nothing. It’s a visual symphony, crafted not by a single artist, but by a community of learners and dreamers.

We invite you to come see this masterpiece yourself. Maybe it’ll inspire you, maybe it’ll challenge you, or maybe, just maybe, it’ll remind you that you, too, can create something extraordinary.
